In Mind Over Medicine: A Common Man's Holistic Guide to Managing Bipolar Disorder, Michael J. Ochinero talks about how he has overcome the downsides of bipolar disorder and how he handles the stresses of his everyday life. "Bipolar disorder can mean that the highs of mania or the lows of depression can last for many hours, days, (in my case) weeks or months at a time. These mood swings are so intense, they can be quite debilitating, interfering with ones ability to function normally," (Ochinero, 2012). The stressors that could send someone suffering from bipolar disorder into an emotional downward spiral could be seen as an ordinary setback to someone who is not suffering from the disorder.
I know that everyone, with or without, bipolar disorder tries to stay stress free, but that is not practical. There is stress in everyone's life and there always will be. Finding healthy and positive ways to manage these stressors is critical when living with bipolar disorder. |
On the holistic options page there are several ways to deal with stressors in healthy ways offered, but understandably it is not always practical to do yoga when facing stressful situations. In lieu of always turning to an exercise method of dealing with stress, try mediation. Mediation is an excellent way to calm one's mind and attempt to get back to status quo.
When in an emotional downward spiral of depressive mood swings try to keep an eye on something that is a reminder of the good in life; a picture of better days, a piece of jewelry, something positive. Remember that when dealing with stressful situations that may or may not lead to depressed mood swings, you are not alone. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
