I'm Jackie. I'm a senior at Wright State University and this is my final project for a Health Communications course, COM 4250. This project is on bipolar disorder.

For this project I decided to focus on bipolar disorder. I found that throughout my research I was more ignorant to this mental disorder than I had previously thought. Bipolar had always been a taboo subject, discussing someone's mental state is frowned upon, even though it affects so many individuals. My limited exposure to this disorders has peeked my curiosity, so this project came at a perfect time. Bipolar is a mental disorder noted for its mood swings ranging from extreme highs (manic) and extreme lows (depression) where finding a balance
I have a personal connection with bipolar, I lost a family member who was battling with bipolar disorder and complications due to improperly prescribed medicine. After Robin Williams’ death I thought it was important to educate myself and others who were unfamiliar with this disorder. Bipolar Disorder is a mental disorder noted for its mood swings ranging from extreme highs (Manic) and extreme lows (Depression) where finding a balance between the two is difficult. |
While doing some preliminary research three questions kept coming to mind. The first question, are there any holistic alternatives instead of or in combination with traditional treatment? The second question, what kind of role does socioeconomic status (SES) play in diagnosis and treatment? Lastly, how does stress affect mood swings? These ended up becoming my guiding questions for the research I was doing. The following pages will go into more depth on these subjects and question some of the themes of the research I was using.
